11Arches: The Vision Behind Kynren

11Arches is the registered charity dedicated to transforming history into unforgettable experiences. Through our world-class productions and community-led initiatives, we celebrate the past, empower the present, and build a legacy for the future. From the globally acclaimed Kynren – An Epic Tale of England to the eagerly anticipated Kynren – The Storied Lands, our mission is to entertain, educate, and inspire, while driving social and economic regeneration in Bishop Auckland and beyond.

Our Mission

At 11Arches, we believe in the power of storytelling to connect people to their heritage and community. Our mission is to:

  • Bring history to life through immersive, world-class performances that spark curiosity and wonder.
  • Create a lasting legacy by reinvesting all proceeds into sustaining our productions and training opportunities.
  • Empower communities by providing volunteers with new skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging.
  • Drive regional regeneration by attracting visitors, creating jobs, and positioning Bishop Auckland as a cultural destination.

A Decade of Impact

Since our inception in 2014, 11Arches has transformed a bold vision into reality. In 2016, we launched Kynren – An Epic Tale of England, a breathtaking night show that takes audiences on a journey through 2,000 years of history. Over the past decade:

  • We have welcomed nearly 400,000 visitors from across the UK and the world.
  • Our volunteer cast and crew of 1,000 people bring history to life each summer.
  • We have contributed £65.5 million to the local economy, with an additional £196.5 million projected through our upcoming expansion.
  • Our commitment to excellence has earned Kynren a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award year after year

The Vision of Jonathan Ruffer

11Arches is one of two charities founded by philanthropist Jonathan Ruffer in Bishop Auckland, the other being The Auckland Project. His vision is to create a world-class visitor destination that fosters economic growth, cultural preservation, and community engagement. His commitment has resulted in an unparalleled philanthropic investment of nearly £280 million, largely private funding, to rejuvenate the town. By 2028, Bishop Auckland is projected to welcome up to 900,000 visitors annually, positioning it as a leading UK heritage destination.

Jonathan Ruffer’s dedication to the region has provided a once-in-a-generation opportunity to drive the cultural and economic revival of Bishop Auckland, ensuring that Kynren serves as lasting legacy for generations to come.

A Self-Sustaining Future

11Arches is more than a charity—it is a movement dedicated to preserving history and fostering community. Every ticket purchased, every donation made, and every volunteer contribution supports:

  • World-class performances that bring history, myth and legend to life.
  • Opportunities for personal growth—helping volunteers develop new skills, build confidence, combat loneliness, and forge lasting friendships.
  • Economic growth that strengthens the local community.
  • A lasting legacy that ensures our impact endures for generations.
